A 60-second animated explainer video can cost very different amounts. The price depends on the production method, visual style, amount of custom work, and professional support. DIY and AI tools cost the least, while custom agency and studio productions cost the most.

An explainer video shows how a product, service, idea, or process works. It can use animation, live footage, screen recordings, narration, music, or a combination of these elements. A quote often covers several stages. These include writing the script, planning the scenes, recording the voiceover, creating the visuals, editing, and making revisions.

To estimate your budget, start with the production method and visual style. Then confirm what the quote includes. A low price may cover only a template and basic editing. A higher price may include strategy, custom artwork, original animation, professional narration, sound mixing, and several rounds of revisions.

Typical prices for a 60-second explainer video

Providers offer different production options, and each quote covers a different scope of work. DIY and AI tools generally cost the least. Freelancers, agencies, and premium studios offer more production support and customization at higher prices.

These comparisons come from Knowlify’s pricing comparison. Other sources report broader project ranges, with prices varying by provider and scope.

The differences come from the wide range of videos called explainers. A template-based video with supplied copy has a different budget from a campaign video with original messaging, custom characters, detailed storyboards, and a studio production crew.

How visual style changes the price

The visual format affects how many people work on the video, how much artwork they create, and how long they spend animating each scene.

Whiteboard animation

Whiteboard videos use hand-drawn visuals that appear on screen as a narrator explains the subject. Knowlify and WowMakers report different pricing for freelancer, agency, studio, and AI-assisted whiteboard production.

A simple whiteboard video with limited illustrations sits near the lower end. Custom drawings, more scenes, original characters, and a carefully directed voiceover raise the price.

2D character animation

Two-dimensional character animation uses illustrated people, objects, and environments that move across a flat visual space. Knowlify and WowMakers report different pricing for freelancer, agency, studio, and AI-assisted production.

Character animation requires more design work than a basic template. Each character may need several poses, facial expressions, and movements. A story with many characters or unique locations needs more artwork before animation begins.

Motion graphics

Motion graphics animate text and interface elements, along with icons, shapes, charts, and other designed objects. They work well for software products, financial services, technical subjects, and business presentations.

Pricing comparisons from Knowlify, VideoKrtoon, and Epipheo show different rates for freelancer, agency, and professional motion-graphics production.

The main cost question is how much of the visual style must be created from scratch. Animated typography and existing brand assets require less work than a fully custom visual system with original illustrations and complex transitions.

3D animation

Three-dimensional animation builds objects, environments, and camera movements in a simulated 3D space. It generally costs more because artists must model, texture, light, animate, and render the scene.

Knowlify, WowMakers, and Epipheo report different pricing for freelancer, agency, and studio 3D production.

Choose 3D when the product, mechanism, or visual experience depends on depth and realistic movement. A simpler 2D format can communicate the same message at a lower cost.

Live action and hybrid video

Live-action explainers use filmed people, locations, products, or demonstrations. WowMakers, Epipheo, and MotionGiraffx describe different pricing for studio, agency, talking-head, and multi-location productions.

A hybrid video combines live action and animation. It costs more than a single-medium production when filming and animation require separate workflows, as MotionGiraffx explains. Before choosing this format, decide whether the live footage adds information that animation cannot communicate as efficiently.

What the quote usually pays for

The biggest budget decisions happen before animation starts. Scriptwriting sets the words, storyboard planning maps those words to scenes, and visual design sets the video’s look. Epipheo estimates that strategy, script, and storyboard account for about two-thirds of the budget for its productions.

A production quote may include these components:

  • Scriptwriting and message development
  • Style frames: still images showing the intended visual direction
  • Storyboard, which maps the script into planned shots
  • Illustration, character design, or 3D modeling
  • Animation or live-action filming
  • Voiceover recording
  • Music and sound effects
  • Editing, sound mixing, and delivery
  • A defined number of revision rounds

Sparkhouse lists separate prices for scriptwriting, style frames, storyboards, voiceover, animation, and sound mixing.

Do not add these figures automatically. Providers package services differently. One quote may include scriptwriting and voiceover, while another charges for them separately. Ask for an itemized scope before comparing prices.

Voiceover, music, and revisions can change the final invoice

Professional narration adds a separate cost. Knowlify and Epipheo distinguish between standard marketplace voices, premium actors, professional union voiceover, and lower-cost AI or stock options.

Music also ranges widely. Knowlify distinguishes between stock music licenses and custom music. Confirm that the music license covers commercial use, the platforms where you will publish the video, and the length of the license. Unlicensed music creates legal exposure for a commercial project.

Pay close attention to revision limits. A revision round is a defined opportunity to request changes after a draft. Providers may include only a small number of rounds and bill for additional changes separately. Knowlify and Epipheo report that extra revision rounds add to the final invoice.

Rush work also raises the price. Both Knowlify and Epipheo report that rush work increases the cost. A rushed schedule can also limit the number of review stages available before animation begins. Give the producer consolidated feedback and approve the script and storyboard before full production to reduce expensive late changes.

How video length affects the budget

A longer video requires more script, scenes, artwork, animation, narration, and editing. The price does not always double when the length doubles because some planning and setup costs stay fixed.

IdeaRocket also notes that the first 60 seconds often carry the highest cost, with a lower per-second price after that.

Keep the script focused. Removing unnecessary scenes before animation starts saves more money than cutting finished footage later.

DIY, freelancer, agency, or studio?

DIY and AI tools offer the lowest direct cost. Knowlify and Epipheo place these tools near the low end, although Epipheo describes some tools as monthly software subscriptions. Bluecarrot states that DIY production can save up to 95% of the budget, with the remaining cost represented by the subscription.

The tradeoff is control and quality. Templates can limit the visual style, character choices, scene structure, and pacing. Bluecarrot warns that DIY production can produce a generic result or a video too weak to deliver the expected business return.

A freelancer suits a focused project with a limited number of styles and a clear approval process. Sparkhouse reports freelancer rates of $25 to $150 per hour. Complex projects carry more risk when one person must write, design, animate, edit, and manage revisions.

A boutique agency provides more production capacity and usually offers a wider range of services. A premium studio adds advanced strategy, art direction, specialist animation, and production management. Epipheo states that its projects have a minimum size, so a smaller budget may fit a freelancer or template tool more effectively.

Choose the provider based on the video’s job. A simple product walkthrough does not need the same production structure as a brand film, investor presentation, or high-end 3D product demonstration.

How to compare quotes accurately

Before accepting a quote, ask the producer to state:

  1. The final video length and delivery format.
  2. Whether scriptwriting and message strategy are included.
  3. How many unique scenes, characters, and illustrations the price covers.
  4. Whether the voiceover uses AI, marketplace talent, union talent, or a named actor.
  5. Whether music, sound effects, and commercial licenses are included.
  6. How many revision rounds are included.
  7. The price for extra revisions and rush delivery.
  8. Whether the quote includes captions, alternate sizes, or shorter cutdowns.

Two videos can look similar in a thumbnail while differing in strategy and writing, custom artwork and animation quality, and review structure and production reliability. Compare their scope and expected outcome alongside the headline price.
