Remotion lets people create videos with code. Its license lets individuals and small organizations use it for free, including for commercial work. A for-profit organization with four or more people needs a paid Company License. Remotion also requires one for collaborations.

The right paid plan depends on whether you make videos manually or use code to render them automatically. If you want narrated explainer videos or product demos without setting up Remotion, explainroo is a free, open-source alternative that uses an AI coding agent to create them.

When a Company License is required

A for-profit organization with four or more people needs a Company License to use Remotion. An organization with three or fewer people can use the Free License, even if it is incorporated. According to Remotion’s license and pricing rules, individuals and nonprofits qualify for free use. People evaluating Remotion before commercial use qualify too.

Remotion’s pricing page also says a Company License is required for collaborations. The pricing page does not define “collaboration,” so ask Remotion if people or organizations are working together and you are unsure whether the rule applies.

The Free License allows commercial use for those who qualify. It does restrict copying or changing Remotion code to sell, rent, license, or sublicense a version derived from Remotion. This restriction applies to distributing a version derived from Remotion. Eligible users can still use Remotion commercially. The license terms describe the restriction.

How much the Company License costs

Remotion offers two paid plans. Remotion for Creators costs $25 per month for each seat. A seat is for a person who writes Remotion code, including with an AI coding tool. This plan is for organizations that make videos manually instead of building an automated rendering service.

Remotion for Automators costs $0.01 per render, with a $100 monthly minimum. An automation is code that uses Remotion’s rendering commands or APIs, or the Remotion Player. Examples include a service that generates videos in batches or a product that creates videos from user inputs. The license FAQ defines what Remotion counts as automation and rendering.

Plan Price Best fit
Remotion for Creators $25 per month per seat People who create videos by writing Remotion code
Remotion for Automators $0.01 per render, with a $100 monthly minimum Code that renders videos or other outputs automatically

You can activate both options with a combined minimum spend of $100 per month, according to Remotion. A render means a successful generation of a video, audio file, GIF, still image, or PDF. Previewing work in Remotion Studio or Remotion Player does not count as a render.

Creators need at least one active seat while using Remotion to render videos. Automators must keep an active license while the automation runs, but can cancel after it fully stops. Developers building an automation do not also need a Creators seat.

The Company License does not add special features. It meets the licensing requirement for organizations that need it and includes priority support response and a tag for access to a private customer channel on Discord.

When to consider an Enterprise License

Remotion’s Enterprise License includes the Company License, plus monthly consulting sessions, custom terms, billing and pricing, and prioritized feature requests. It starts at $500 per month, with a $500 minimum spend. Remotion says it may quote a higher price when a customer’s requirements involve more effort, risk, or resources. See the license FAQ for the terms.

How explainroo compares, and when it fits better

Remotion lets developers build video creation into code. With explainroo, an AI coding agent uses its open-source kit to create a narrated explainer video or product demo on your computer. The kit is under the MIT license, and its video-making components cost nothing per video. Optional AI illustrations cost extra per image, and the coding agent is a separate service with its own pricing.

To try it, paste this prompt into a compatible coding agent, replacing the bracketed text with your topic:

Make me a short explainer video about [your topic]. Use explainroo for it: clone the explainroo repository, read its AGENTS.md and follow the steps.

The agent sets up explainroo, makes and checks the video, then gives you an MP4 file. The agent writes script.md for the spoken words and scenes.js for the drawings. explainroo handles narration, timing, graphics, sound, and video assembly on your computer. The voice model offers natural American and British English voices, and narration is in English only. For a product demo, tell the agent which product to show and where to find its code or website; it recreates the screens and animates clicks and typing.

Choose explainroo if you want a narrated explainer or product demo and would rather describe the video to an agent than build a video-rendering product in code. It does not edit existing camera footage or create talking avatars or live-action AI footage, and it has no drag-and-drop editor. See example videos or the explainroo documentation to decide whether its agent-led approach suits your project.

Check the license before using a new Remotion version

Remotion’s license file says the license will change slightly with version 5. Before relying on the prices or eligibility rules above for a new version, check the current pricing page and the license terms that apply to that version.

Let your AI agent make the video

explainroo lets a coding agent like Claude Code or Codex make narrated explainer videos and product demos. The voice, the word timing and the rendering run on your own computer, with no API key and no cost per video.
