How a password manager keeps you safe

Many people use the same password on lots of sites. When one of those sites leaks it, attackers try it on your other accounts too.
A password manager starts with one strong master password. That password unlocks your vault. The vault is encrypted, which means it is scrambled and nobody can read it without that password.
For every site, the manager makes a new password that is long and random. No two of them are the same, and they all live in the vault.
You never have to remember them. When you open a login page, the manager fills in the right password for that site.
Now say one site leaks your password. The attacker gets that one password. It does not work anywhere else, so your other accounts stay locked.
You remember one strong password, and every site gets its own. So one leaked password can only open one account.
